Step Forward With Lewis CIC is a Community Interest Company, formed to provide falls prevention classes to elderly and vulnerable people, or those who may have suffered from life-changing illnesses or conditions including Parkinson’s and cancer.
We operate in the Northamptonshire area, offering strength and balance classes to older and more vulnerable people in Hardingstone, Wootton, Hunsbury and Milton Malsor. We also put on specialist sessions for those with cancer or who are in remission at The Elgar Centre in Upton, and for people with Parkinson’s at the Doddridge Centre in St James.
The programme provides strength and balance sessions for older and frailer adults, as well as those with pre-existing conditions or who may be vulnerable to falls.
Michelle is a qualified OTAGO instructor. As such, she can teach later life training to allow older people to avoid falls, maintain good health and remain independent.
Clinical trials have shown that with the Otago programme, the number of falls in older people is reduced, and injuries from those falls is also reduced. The programme has the greatest effect in high-risk groups: those aged over 80 years or who’ve had a previous fall.
As well as having a positive impact on those who attend classes, our work eases pressure on the health service as people are having less falls and attending their GP/A&E less often. We believe in building community, encouraging clients to come for a coffee after sessions, facilitating friendships, building community, and even putting on Christmas Lunch.
